“And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth”. Exodus 34:6 (KJV)

No one can keep God’s laws. No one! The Ten Commandments were not given to be kept by man. God knew the Israelites would fail. The law was given so that man could come to the end of himself and understand that he cannot help himself.

Notice that as soon as God finished giving the law in the Book of Exodus, His mercies and loving kindness were expressed in Exodus 20:24, “An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee” (KJV). God gave Israel His laws, and in His mercy and foreknowledge, He knew they couldn’t keep them. So, in advance, He said: “Prepare an altar because, I know you will fail. Let that altar be the place that I will meet with you so that I can bless you.”

That altar signifies Jesus, our final sacrifice. It stands for what Jesus did on our behalf. God was saying, “These are the laws. But I will not let the devil kill you, because I have great plans for your life. I will deal with you from the altar.” However, some Christians still want to deal with God from the table of the laws.

Beloved, stop functioning from the laws. Come to the cross and partake of the mercies in Christ. Jesus Christ is the manifestation of the mercy of God. Christ is God’s answer to man’s inability to keep the law. You cannot function from the table of the laws and expect to access His mercy. Look away from yourself and receive by faith what God’s mercy has accomplished for you in Christ.
